Boston is the capital and largest city in Massachusetts in the United States. It is also among the oldest and wealthiest cities in the United States. The economy of the city is based on education, health care, finance, and high technology. As Boston has much sway on cultural, intellectual, and political matters, the city is also nicknamed The Athens of America and "The Hub". According to the 2000 census, the city has a population of 589,141. The Greater Boston metropolitan area comprising cities like Cambridge, Somerville, and Brookline, has about 5.7 million inhabitants. Boston was founded on September 17, 1630, on a peninsula called Shawmut by the Native Americans who lived there. The city is named after Boston, England, a town in Lincolnshire from which several well known migrant originated.

In the 1760s, Boston was the largest, wealthiest and very influential city of United States. On March 20, 1760 the "Great Fire" of Boston destroyed 349 buildings. Boston was bonded as a city 1822, and by the mid-1800s it became the largest manufacturing centers in the nation prominent for its garment, leather goods, and machinery industries. The Boston Female Medical School, first medical school for women opened in Boston on November 1, 1848. On September 1, 1897 the first underground metro, the Boston subway was opened in North America. Boston has undergone many disasters and financial crisis but has always come up rebuilding its structures and economy. In the 1970s, after much economic downturn, Boston exploded financially Boston became a leader in the mutual fund industry. Health care, Higher education became more extensive and expensive. MIT graduates founded many successful high-tech companies, which made Boston second only to Silicon Valley as a high-tech center. In 1991 the project Big Dig moved an untidy heap of elevated highway routes underground, produced the Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge. It also made more than 70 acres of public parks in the heart of the city. Despite the losses Boston city has seen, it is among the unique cities of the world and have improved racial tensions have eased radically in the last few years.
